Pastel Paintings
"The essence of pastels is the aesthetic experience of drawing with color"
"The Pastel Book" by Bill Creevy
Painting with pastels was originally the approach I took as a pathway back into painting with oils, a medium I dabbled in years ago. But after understanding it's potential for immediate execution, brightness, and permanence, it became evident that painting with pastels is a medium that needed more exploration and development. There are so many talented pastelists and extraordinary examples of landscape painting that it was easy to "get hooked" on this art form.
The finished paintings must be framed and protected with glass since the surface can be easily smudged or damaged since I use no spray fixative

"We must have design in a picture even at the expense of truth. You are using nature for your artistic needs"
- John Carlson
My design background in architecture provides me with valuable experience in achieving a pre-determined outcome through composition and content. I paint a lot from memory and photographic "evidence' gathered at the site. I take the liberty of adding new features and removing existing features, moving or deleting a tree or rock if those actions produce a more pleasing painting. This is the liberty I take to express myself as an artist.
